New DNA sequencing technologies enable us to decode the billions of molecules of DNA left behind by organisms in the environment, a
nd we can use a DNA reference database such as GenBank to match many of these molecules to the species from which they originated.
This is transforming the way we do ecological monitoring, and provides a new lens to explore the abundance of life beneath the surface.
