About the draft plan
Tātou ki Uta – our draft Coastal Reserves Management Plan is a 10-year plan for how the city will care for, protect, and enjoy using Wellington’s coastal areas from Oriental Bay to Karori Stream. ![]()
The plan outlines 5 core values that drive our coastal management approach, and the steps needed to bring these values to life. It also divides Wellington’s coastline into 8 distinct geographic areas, and describes key values, features, challenges, and actions
unique to each area. ![]()
Over 80 actions are proposed in the plan ranging from practical upgrades such as improved toilets and tracks, to longer-term projects like erosion control, rules for protecting wildlife, and restoring Māori names to reserves. ![]()
Alongside the plan, we’re seeking feedback on proposed rules for activities in coastal areas and suggested name changes for select reserves. ![]()
Coming soon: Later in June you’ll have the opportunity to provide feedback on proposed classifications or reclassifications of 21 areas of coastal land under the Reserves Act 1977, as part of our management plan review.
Previous engagement: The draft plan has been developed using valuable feedback gathered during early engagement in 2024 — thank you to everyone who contributed. A summary of this engagement and how it shaped the plan is available on the Let’s Talk website.![]()
Spread the word :We’d appreciate your help to spread the word with your communities by sharing Council posts or the Let’s Talk link in your Facebook groups or other channels.

Commercial ratesThis photo of Steve Walters (@Destination KRL), Bernadette Pallister (Tawa Business Group Incorporated), and Mary Anderson (Miramar Peninsula) was taken moments after delivering two back-to-back oral submissions to Wellington City Council last week.
Steve opened with a powerful message on behalf of KRL, followed by a joint submission representing six suburban BIDs across the city. The message was clear and direct: the commercial rates burden is unsustainable, suburban centres are underfunded, and businesses are being pushed to the edge.
Councillors listened closely, asked sharp questions, and actively sought ways they could help. The room was engaged — and the issues clearly hit home.
Thanks to our business community — your voices gave this submission real weight. Johnsonville Business Group Karori Business Association Khandallah Business Association
